2011/2012 Race Season

15th October Opening night Palmerston North

After a short off season of many trips to our second home in Hawera we had finally made it to Opening Night.  The only thing that would stop me now was the voodoo of the rain!  Which I hoped I had shaken after the 2010/2011 season where I seemed to take the rain where ever I went.  So on the trip south from Hawera with the car ready to go, (many thanks to GB and family for their long hours getting the car together.  Also Midwest Motors for the off season freshen up of the Toyota).  When the heavens opened I had a sinking feeling that the rain might be following me again!!

Optimistically the Palmerston team started the race season under threatening skies.  I managed to roll 34P out for a practice, the car felt great – the driver a little rusty!  Big thanks must go out to Craig Humphries for helping me find the gas pedal on the back straight, and putting the first dent for the season in the back bumper.

Right on cue the heavens opened up just as I was preparing to get onto the grid, after watching Mini Stock 32P own the track I figured it couldn’t be too bad out there so got myself belted in and the 2011/2012 season was under way.  This was to come to an abrupt stop after I managed to launch myself backwards into turn 3, on a track that was not at all to my likening, surprising really considering that the majority of my short race career has been on wet tracks.  Fortunately I was not the only one to end up in this predicament.  The meeting was called shortly after.

Big thanks to Bex Barr for getting rid of all the mud and clay off my car on Sunday morning.

22nd October Opening Night Woodford Glen - Christchurch

Having not had the start to the season I had hoped for in Palmy I was kindly offered a drive in the 9C stockcar.  Having raced this car a couple of times in the 2010/2011 season I was looking forward to getting some more laps under my belt on a track that I really like racing on.  Although there were a couple of hurdles to overcome, my helmet was broken on the return flight home from Palmy the week before – really not having any luck! So had to purchase a new one, then there was the weather….forecast was for showers and fine patches on Saturday however the torrential down pours of the week were to put an end to any chance of running the opening meeting at Woodford Glen due to the water logged track.

Hoping that the Voodoo of the ‘rainman’ will not follow me to Palmy for the next race meeting on the 29th October!

Cheers Westy
